The New Orleans Pelicans are turning to a familiar Louisiana face in hopes of reviving their franchise.
On Monday, the team announced that Hall of Famer and Shreveport native Joe Dumars has been appointed Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. The move comes on the heels of a disappointing 2024–2025 season that saw the Pelicans miss the playoffs yet again, despite a roster loaded with talent and potential.
Dumars, who earned a reputation as both a fierce competitor on the court and a savvy executive in the front office, is no stranger to building winning basketball cultures. And now, he's bringing that legacy home.
A Louisiana Legend Comes Home
Born and raised in Shreveport, Dumars starred at McNeese State University before joining the NBA in 1985. Over his 14-year career with the Detroit Pistons, he won two NBA Championships, earned six All-Star selections, and was named the 1996 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner. Known for his quiet leadership and defensive tenacity, he became a key piece of Detroit’s “Bad Boys” era.
After retiring in 1999, Dumars moved into the front office—where he made an even bigger mark. As President of Basketball Operations for the Pistons, he built the 2004 NBA Championship team and was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2003.
Now, he’s back in Louisiana, ready to lead a new chapter in New Orleans basketball.
Pelicans in Need of Direction
The Pelicans have struggled to find consistency since entering the league in 2002. Despite a roster that includes superstars like Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the team has often fallen short of expectations due to injuries, chemistry issues, and front office instability.
This past season was no exception. The team hovered near .500, failed to make a meaningful playoff run, and left fans with more questions than answers.
The hiring of Dumars signals a clear shift in leadership tone. He’s expected to bring structure, long-term planning, and a winning mindset to a franchise that’s been missing all three.
What to Watch For
Dumars will oversee basketball operations, which likely means roster decisions, coaching evaluations, and strategic planning for the offseason.
Early questions include:
Will Dumars retain General Manager Trajan Langdon and Head Coach Willie Green?
Will the Pelicans continue to build around Zion, or consider a roster reset?
How will Dumars approach the 2025 NBA Draft and free agency?
League insiders say Dumars is highly respected by players, agents, and executives alike—giving the Pelicans a much-needed edge in talent acquisition and locker room credibility.
More Than Just a Basketball Move
Beyond his resume, Dumars brings something even more valuable to New Orleans: a connection to the state and a deep understanding of Louisiana culture. His presence could reenergize a fan base that’s grown weary of empty promises and rebuilds that never quite deliver.
For a franchise in need of an identity, Joe Dumars might just be the steady hand—and the Louisiana heart—that finally points the Pelicans in the right direction.
