Louisiana's Festival Season: A Celebration of Music, Culture, and Community
By The Bayou Insider Staff
As spring rolls into summer, Louisiana lights up with the sounds, sights, and flavors that make our state one of the most culturally rich places in the world. From the banks of Bayou St. John to the fairgrounds of Franklinton, this late-May festival lineup offers something for everyone—whether you're in the mood for Greek food, Zydeco rhythms, or hot air balloon glows.
Here are four major festivals you won’t want to miss:
New Orleans Greek Festival
When: May 23–25, 2025
Where: Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral (Hellenic Cultural Center), 1200 Allen Toussaint Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70122
Step into a slice of the Aegean on Bayou St. John at the 50th Annual New Orleans Greek Festival. Parishioners transform the Cathedral grounds into a Hellenic hub, serving up spanakopita, gyro sandwiches, loukoumades (Greek-style beignets), and authentic frappés. Live Greek music stages spotlight traditional vocals and bouzouki players, while Hellenic dancers teach the Zorba and other folk dances.
Families can explore the Athenian Playground—complete with face painting and inflatables—take guided tours of the 160-year-old Cathedral, or join the Friday Walk/Run for an early-bird festival pre-party (complete with beer for runners!). Admission is $10 daily or $25 for a weekend pass; children under 12 enter free.
Zydeco Extravaganza – Lafayette
When: May 25, 2025 (noon–10:00 PM)
Where: Blackham Coliseum, 444 Cajundome Blvd., Lafayette, LA 70506
Dubbed “the granddaddy of them all,” Zydeco Extravaganza brings South Louisiana’s signature sound indoors for an all-day party. This year’s lineup features top Creole and Cajun acts—Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys, Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band, Leon Chavis & the Zydeco Flames, and more—sharing the stage from noon until late evening.
Beyond the music, sample authentic Acadiana fare from local food vendors and browse a curated arts & crafts market. Tickets start at $25; kids 12 and under attend free.
Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival – New Orleans
When: May 31–June 1, 2025 (doors open 2:00 PM; music 3:00–8:30 PM)
Where: George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St., New Orleans, LA 70116
Presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, this free two-day festival celebrates Louisiana’s indigenous sounds under the oaks at the Jazz & Heritage Center. Swing to Cajun two-steps, stomp to zydeco rub-boards, and sample local food booths serving boudin, cracklins, and other regional specialties. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy evening performances by renowned artists such as Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers.
Washington Parish Balloon Festival – Franklinton
When: May 30–June 1, 2025
Where: Washington Parish Fairgrounds, 100 Main St., Franklinton, LA 70438
Look skyward at the Washington Parish Balloon Festival’s hot air balloon glows each evening, then climb aboard tethered rides for a dawn-flight preview. Daytimes are filled with live music on the main stage, carnival rides, a rodeo, and food & craft vendors lining the fairgrounds. Admission is $5 per day, $12 for a three-day pass, or splurge on VIP access ($100) with air-conditioned respite and exclusive viewing areas.
