For years, we were told to trust the experts. We were told that COVID-19 emerged naturally, that questioning the narrative was dangerous, and that anyone who suggested otherwise was peddling misinformation. But now, as more evidence comes to light, even federal agencies and congressional investigations are acknowledging what many of us suspected from the beginning: the virus that changed our world may have come from a lab in Wuhan, China—and the American government may have helped fund it.
For Louisiana, a state that was devastated by the pandemic, the implications are deeply personal. We lost thousands. Our economy crumbled. Our communities suffered. And if COVID truly began in a lab, we deserve answers—and accountability.
A State Left Exposed
Louisiana didn’t just endure the pandemic. We were one of the states hit the hardest. The virus ripped through our parishes, overwhelmed our hospitals, and turned family gatherings into funerals.
It started in March 2020, but the spark was lit weeks earlier. Mardi Gras—our proudest cultural tradition—went on as planned, with no warnings from federal health agencies. No cancellations. No caution. Just parades, parties, and people packed shoulder to shoulder. In hindsight, it was a super-spreader event that set the stage for a catastrophic outbreak.
Within weeks, hospitals in New Orleans and Baton Rouge were at capacity. National Guard trucks rolled in. Mobile morgues were set up. Doctors and nurses worked double shifts in full PPE. And still, people died.
We obeyed the lockdowns. We masked. We shut down businesses and schools. We did what we were told. But what if the people issuing those orders weren’t being honest about where this virus came from—or what they knew?
What the Numbers Don’t Show
Since the start of the pandemic, Louisiana has reported more than 1.6 million cases and nearly 20,000 confirmed deaths. Those are just numbers. What they don’t show are the pastors buried, the grandparents lost, the nurses pushed past their limits, and the kids who fell behind after years out of the classroom.
COVID exposed the fragility of our healthcare system, especially in rural parishes. It widened racial and economic disparities. And it destroyed small businesses that still haven’t bounced back. The people of Louisiana paid the price—while unelected bureaucrats in D.C. played games with the truth.
The Lab Leak: No Longer a Conspiracy
Now we know that U.S. agencies funded risky “gain-of-function” research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology—experiments that enhance viruses to study how they might spread or evolve. Dr. Fauci and others assured us this wasn’t happening. But documents, emails, and testimony tell a different story.
Organizations like EcoHealth Alliance, using U.S. taxpayer dollars, funded coronavirus research in Wuhan. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, scientists debated whether the virus looked engineered—but told the public it emerged “naturally” from a wet market.
That deception cost lives.
And now? No animal host has ever been found. No natural pathway has ever been proven. And yet, the people who misled the public are still lecturing the rest of us.
Louisiana Deserves the Truth
This isn’t about politics. It’s about the truth—and the fact that Louisiana’s people suffered while others covered their tracks. If COVID-19 came from a lab, and if our own government helped fund the research that led to it, then the people of this state deserve more than vague apologies and quiet retractions. We deserve transparency. We deserve accountability. And we deserve real reform.
Our lawmakers should demand full congressional investigations into the origins of COVID-19, the role of U.S. agencies in Wuhan, and why federal health officials worked so hard to bury the lab leak theory. We should also reconsider our blind trust in “the science” when it’s filtered through politics and power.
The Cost Was Real. The Accountability Should Be Too.
COVID-19 devastated Louisiana. Not just physically, but economically, socially, and spiritually. Churches were closed. Businesses collapsed. Families were torn apart. Children lost years of education and mental health support. And now, after all we endured, we’re learning that the very people who claimed to “follow the science” may have been hiding what they knew all along.
Louisiana bore the brunt of this pandemic. We should not stay silent while others rewrite the history of what happened. The time for excuses is over. The time for answers is now.
